How Did We Get Here?
“travelin’ local” got its name from a Wiseboy Jeremy song off of his album, “Still Chldrn”. The yearning instrumentals and his live performances of the original song, “Travelin’ local”, inspired me. Back in high school, I held shows at my parents’ house, and in a few of those lineups, Wiseboy Jeremy performed. Each time, he would profess his love and loyalty to South Jersey. I shared this respect for our home and was also starving for a music community.
The Original Playlist
The first version of the playlist was born in December 2021, and it was simply a place to listen to all of my favorite artists. As I grew up in the scene and listened to more and more bands, I felt the need to expand on the playlist, but hesitated to touch what I already had. I wanted to share the incredible skill of the music I’d encountered with my friends and followers. I believe that the pure innovation that the Philadelphia/South Jersey area has to offer goes way overlooked, especially that from New Jersey.
#2 was released in November 2023. This playlist features all newer music from some of my absolute favorite artists. The second “travelin’ local” began the format goal of new music, and a length of 19-25 minutes. I knew if I continued to add to the original “travelin’ local”, its monstrous size would deter anyone just tuning in. This length frame is easily digestible, and there’s always the opportunity go back and look to a previous playlist. It also creates a manageable posting schedule for me.
What Does Playlist Means to Me?
In it’s current iteration, “travelin’ local” consists of music that I genuinely enjoy. I see this playlist as a digital scrapbook of the community I love. After being involved for over 8 years, I see my music taste as a bit of badge I wear on my shirt. In no way am I an insanely well-versed person on every artist to put out music in Philadelphia and New Jersey. However, I try my best to explore as much as I can.
