Who is Dana Johann?
Welcome back to Lucid Media Blog, where we showcase the best indie artists from the New Jersey Metro Area. Today, we’re showcasing our very own Dana Johann, a vital part of Lucid Media Blog and a talented musician. Dana’s music combines introspection and indie authenticity to create “dreary indie rock,” a unique sound that resonates locally. We asked her about this and more in today’s exclusive Q&A.
Origins
Dana, from Burlington County, NJ, was inspired to pursue music by bands like My Chemical Romance, especially Frank Iero. Subsequently trading horseback riding for guitar lessons, her musical journey began, fueled by a desire to channel her angst and emotions into melodies and songs.
Influences & Inspirations
Drawing from a diverse pool of influences, Dana finds resonance in the soothing storytelling of Tamino, the quirky charm of Mac DeMarco, and the skilled wit of local bands like Swansun and Sore Winner. Their artistry serves as both inspiration and aspiration, urging her to evolve as a musician continually.
Dana’s Hot Takes
Dana navigates the vast landscape of contemporary music with awe and appriaitation. While overwhelmed by the sheer volume of content available in the modern era, she generally anticipates a shift towards a slower, more appreciative approach to consuming art, with a resurgence of regional scenes and tangible music formats. The fast-paced and vapid music industry is just that, an industry. Dana foresees artists reclaiming their independence and get back to basics. Artists and fans.

Favorite Local Artists
Immersed in the local music scene, Dana admires artists like Swansun, Sore Winner, Wiseboy Jeremy, and others. Also collaborative ventures with Goth Goth and a current project featuring talents like Swansun’s Alan DeCecco and The Jettys‘ Matt “The Kulprit” Kulpa have been particularly memorable, otherwise highlighting the camaraderie and creativity within the community.
Highlighting “Cold Brew”
“Cold Brew” is a fan favorite from her 2021 project “The Tower“, showcasing Dana’s distinctive sound. Her indie rock ethos is evident throughout this EP, from songwriting and lyrics to instrumentation and melodies. As she gears up for future releases, her playlist “Travelin’ local” serves as a testament to the wealth of talent in her area, hinting at the sonic treasures yet to be unearthed.
As Dana Johann prepares to unveil her upcoming EP or single, her journey as a musician unfolds. She promises listeners an evocative blend of introspection and innovation.
